  Add Date : 2017-08-31
Tired of Unity? Or just do not like it? Why not try installing Gnome 3.10 on Ubuntu 13.10? Installing a new desktop environment is one of the few things to do after installing Ubuntu 13.10, if you want to try it out. In this quick tutorial we will share how to install Gnome 3.10 in Ubuntu 13.10.

Installing Gnome 3.10 in Ubuntu 13.10:

We will take some time to install Gnome 3.10 with several PPAs and assign the upgrade. I assume that your network speed is good, if not, you can use some tips to improve Ubuntu13.10 system performance.

Step 1: Install GDM [Optional]

The first step is to install GDM and the default LightDM. This is optional, but still advise you as many people to remind the LightDM problem (this sentence is not fluent, but do not understand, also requested the team leader to look at). Open the terminal (Ctrl + Alt + T) and use the following command:

Sudo apt-get install gdm
When prompted, select GDM.

Step 2: Add PPAs and upgrade the system

Now it's time to add Gnome 3.10 PPA again. Adding the PPA with the following command will take some time and download 200 MB of data.

Sudo add-apt-repository ppa: gnome3-team / gnome3-next
Sudo add-apt-repository ppa: gnome3-team / gnome3-staging
Sudo apt-get update
Sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
Step 3: Install the Gnome shell

Once the upgrade has been completed, you can use the following command to install Gnome3.10 in Ubuntu.

Sudo apt-get install gnome-shell
Step 4: Install Gnome-specific applications [Optional]

This step is optional. You may want to install some Gnome-specific applications to achieve the Gnome 3.10 in Ubuntu perfect experience. You may encounter some application-related issues.

Sudo apt-get install gnome-weather gnome-music gnome-maps gnome-documents gnome-boxes gnome-boxes gnome-shell-extensions gnome-tweak-tool gnome-clocks
These are all you need to do. Restart your computer and, when you log in, select Gnome by clicking the gear icon. Here is the effect of my Gnome 3.10 on my laptop:

Uninstalling Gnome 3.10:

Do not like Gnome 3.10? Do not worry, uninstall them by deleting PPA. To do this, you need to install PPA Purge (if not already installed). Use the following command:

Sudo apt-get install ppa-purge
After that, install the PPA you installed:

Sudo ppa-purge ppa: gnome3-team / gnome3-staging
Sudo ppa-purge ppa: gnome3-team / gnome3-next
It is possible to restore Gnome 3.10 to Gnome 3.8 in the Ubuntu 13.10 repository. To completely remove Gnome 3, use the following command:

Sudo apt-get remove gnome-shell ubuntu-gnome-desktop
Of course, you should remove any applications that you install for Gnome 3.10.

I hope this tutorial will help you install Gnome 3.10 in Ubuntu 13.10. Try Gnome 3.10? Which do you prefer, Gnome or Unity?
