As a novice user of a Unix system, how can I tell if my Unix server installation is 32-bit or 64-bit operating system?

You can use the following commands to obtain information about the Unix kernel and CPU architectures.

getconf command: display digits machine hardware and kernel.

In your terminal Qiaoxia following commands.

Solaris Unix

isainfo -v

isainfo -kv

OS X Unix

getconf LONG_BIT

getconf LONG_BIT

If your operating system is 64-bit architecture, then you will see 64, ia64 or x86_64 words.

Conversely, if you see 32, i386 words, the operating system is compiled to run in 32-bit processing stone.

uname command

You can also use the uname command

uname -a

Here is the output of the uname command on OS X systems

Darwin Viveks-MacBook-Pro.local 15.0.0 Darwin Kernel Version 15.0.0: Wed Aug 26 16:57:32 PDT 2015; root: xnu-3247.1.106 ~ 1 / RELEASE_X86_64 x86_64
